Drs. James and Jill Winget Raleigh, NC

Name: Neil V.

In the Spring of 2001 I began experiencing severe neck, right upper back and right shoulder pain. The pain was a deep burning and aching sensation that would not stop. Over a few weeks the pain intensifies and caused my right upper arm and right thumb to go completely numb. T this point I could only sleep for short periods and only if I lies directly on my right side to numb the pain area. I had not experienced any direct or sudden trauma to my neck, back or arms so; I was at a loss as to the cause.

My first treatment was at a hospital emergency room one evening when I could not bare any more of the pain. I had not slept well in quite some time and this was affecting my home and work life. At the ER the doctor took x-ray and gave me six injections directly into my neck, back and shoulder muscles. He prescribed anti-inflammatory and pain medications. The diagnosis at the hospital was "muscle spasms" and a "pinched nerve". I was advised to follow up with an Orthopedic doctor. The injections only helped for a few hours and the medications did nothing to help. It took over tow weeks to get in to see the orthopedic doctor. He prescribed two more drugs and said that I needed physical therapy. He described the "injury" as "severe muscle spasms and inflammation" caused by some trauma to the neck.

Several years prior to this condition I had worked as an automobile insurance claims adjuster for a major insurance company. Part of my job was to review medical bills that occurred following automobile accidents. Quickly into the job I discovered that many people presented fraudulent insurance claims seeking a financial award. One of the most common practices was for the person to seek an attorney's advice and chiropractic treatment. Several attorneys seemed to have a "script" that they would follow for a "minor" accident. The accident victim seeking an attorney's advice would always seek care form the same chiropractor. The treatment would always last the same amount of time and be close to the same amount. Because of these practices, chiropractic care was considered an area of scrutiny. Around the insurance circles Chiropractors were called "quack-practors". Because of this experience, I had the assumption that Chiropractic care was a joke.

I met Dr. Winget while playing softball for a local Raleigh team. I did not know he was a Chiropractor until one of my teammates told me to check him out. I decided to give Dr. Winget a shot. I was impressed from the first visit because both Dr. Wingets' took great care of me and time in dealing with my condition. My x-rays revealed a severe subluxation in my neck. In fact, my neck was curved opposite the natural direction. This subluxation showed direct pressure to nerves in two vertebrae. Dr. Winget began my adjustments daily for the first week. I could not lie on the traction block for more than a minute without having to sit up from the pain. After one week I noticed a huge difference. The pain had subsided considerably and I could sleep though the night for the first time in many months. Over the course of the next few weeks the numbness in my arm and thumb went away and I felt like a new person.

The progress has been wonderful. I realize now that there is no "quick fix" for years of abuse. I have been an active participant in many sports in my life and have had many bad traumas. I know the road is long towards full recovery and I plan on continued maintenance after that. I am extremely satisfied with my care and progress and now am a "believer" of "true" Chiropractic care.
