Drs. Bruce Wong and Dr. Katherine Higgins-Katoa, Honolulu, Hawaii
At the age of 10 1/2 I began my menstrual cycle, and experienced
symptoms including abdominal pain, cramping, lower back pain, nausea,
headaches, diarrhea, constipation and extreme fatigue. I was prescribed
motrin, and would often take triple the dosage, with no relief. The pain
would often wake me, and I missed an averaged of 3-4 days of school per
month. At 15, I had my first of many, ovarian cysts. I was given Tylenol
3 with codeine for the pain and would eventually have an abdominal and
vaginal ultrasound procedure for the cysts that followed. At 17, I underwent
an EEG procedure to find the cause of fainting and fatigue I was experiencing,
but no cause was found. I also developed an unusual problem, I became
an adult bed-wetter. At 19 I was diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome.
Symptoms included abdominal pain, diarrhea, and bloody stool.
At 21 I
was given a colonoscopy to determine the cause of the problem.
My doctor also tried the birth control pill for my continuing
menstrual problems. The pills gave me migraine headaches.
I was also diagnosed a manic depressive, and given lithium
as treatment. At 23, I was diagnosed with asthma and allergies
and was put on 3 different pills (Accolate, Volmax, Thoephylan),3
inhalers (Flovent, Aramid-m, and Proventil), and a nebulizer
as needed. When I would get sick, I was given codeine cough
medicine, antibiotics and Prednisone (a strong steroid),
which would make my kidneys ache. However, I would often
drive from store to store in the middle of the night in search of cough
suppressants, because none of the prescribed medications seemed to work.
I did discover that the codeine cough syrup doubled nicely as a pain
reliever for my menstrual pain, and was able to get refills easily over
the phone. Taking a few shots at night during my cycle became routine.
At
23, I was diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome, and given
pills for the pain, and braces for my wrists. No cause was found,
and surgery the only option.Through the years, the medical
response was always the same, pills, pills, more pills, procedures, and
the always comforting, " Its
all in your head." and "You're just going to have to learn
to live with it".
By the time I began chiropractic care at the age
of 26, I was 100lbs overweight and medicated 24 hours a day.
In addition to my many illnesses and procedures I had a family history
of heart disease, diabetes, chronic migraines, asthma, and gout. My chiropractor
never promised relief or cures from her symptoms, or that they would
never re-occur, only that her subluxations would be corrected. I have
just finished my first two years of chiropractic care. I have no asthma,
allergy, carpal tunnel, or digestive symptoms. There are no signs of
bed wetting, manic depression, or menstrual symptoms. I am free of all
medications. I accomplished my biggest goal this year: I finished the
Honolulu Marathon 26.2 miles. Chiropractic did for me in four months,
what a lifetime of Medicine could not do.
I am a new person, with a new
life. My chiropractor is my only health care provider now. After 17 years
of pain and suffering, I finally learned the truth, and it is this: THE
POWER THAT MADE THE BODY, HEALS THE BODY! AND IT DOESN'T HAPPEN ANY OTHER
WAY!!!! I am so sold out on chiropractic that I am enrolling in chiropractic
college myself.
